Top Birding Spots

One of the best ways to see new birds is to join your local National Audubon Society chapter or another nature club on a field trip. Participants often visit new areas, learn how to identify new birds, and meet people who share a common interest.

Southeast Arizona is a nationally recognized as one of the country’s foremost birding destinations. There are two excellent bird-finding guides for Southeastern Arizona:

* Taylor, Richard Cachor. 2005. A Birder’s Guide to Southeastern Arizona. American Birding Association.
* Stevenson, Mark, editor. 2007. Tucson Audubon Society’s Finding Birds in Southeastern Arizona. Tucson Audubon Society.

Some of the top birding locations in southeastern Arizona are listed below.

* Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
* Cave Creek Canyon (Chiricahua Mountains)
* Madera and Florida Canyons (Santa Rita Mountains)
* Mt. Lemmon (Santa Catalina Mountains)
* Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve
* Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Ash Canyon and Miller Canyon (Huachuca Mountains)
* San Pedro River National Conservation Area (east of Sierra Vista)
* Sweetwater Wetlands
