Los Angeles Region

Birds of the Los Angeles Region includes areas within a roughly 50 mile radius of downtown Los Angeles. This encompasses the Los Angeles Basin, the San Fernando, San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, the coastal areas from Pt. Mugu and the Oxnard Plain in Ventura County south to Newport Bay, Irvine and Doheny Beach in Orange County, the San Gabriel Mountains (and adjacent ranges stretching to the west), and the Antelope Valley portion of the western Mojave Desert north to the Kern County line. The term “Region”, as used in the book, refers to this entire geographical area, as depicted on the map inside the front cover. The Region also includes offshore waters from the mainland to Santa Catalina Island, although we focus mainly on those offshore (“pelagic”) species which can often be seen from shore. This book is for anyone interested in bird life in or near Los Angeles (from Malibu, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley east to Pasadena, Pomona and Claremont, and from Lancaster/Palmdale south to Long Beach), Orange County (including Anaheim, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and Irvine), the “Inland Empire” areas including Ontario, San Bernardino, and Riverside, and the eastern portion of Ventura County. The Region extends from Sea Level to 10,064’ (at the summit of Mt. San Antonio) and includes areas ranging in total annual precipitation from less than 8 inches (Antelope Valley) to over 35 inches (Mt. Wilson).
