Top Birding Spots
One of the best ways to see new birds is to join your local National Audubon Society chapter or another nature club on a field trip.
Participants often visit new areas, learn how to identify new birds, and meet people who share a common interest. After studying the birds in your yard, visit local parks and greenbelts. A selection of top birding locations in the Inland Northwest and Northern Rockies area is listed below.
Eastern Oregon: Cascade Lakes Highway, Cold Springs and Indian Ford Campgrounds, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Klamath Basin, Ladd Marsh Wildlife Management Area, Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, McNary Wildlife Nature Area, Steens Mountain, Summer Lake Wildlife Area, Sycan Marsh, and the Wallowa Valley.
Eastern Washington: Coppei Creek, Fields Spring State Park, Kamiak Butte County Park, Lyons Ferry State Park, Potholes Reservoir, Sanpoil River Valley, Soap Lake, Steptoe Butte State Park, Sullivan Lake, Walla Walla River delta, and Yakima River delta.
Idaho: American Falls Reservoir, Boise Greenbelt and parks, Camas National Wildlife Refuge, C.J. Strike Reservoir, Hagerman Wildlife Management Area, Market Lake Wildlife Management Area, Lake Coeur d’Alene, Lake Lowell, Lewiston area, Owyhee County desert and uplands, Sandpoint area, and Ted Trueblood Wildlife Management Area.
Western Montana: Beartooth Highway, Canyon Ferry Reservoir, Ennis Lake, Flathead Lake, Georgetown Lake, Glacier National Park, Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, National Bison Range, Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge, Red Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, and Yellowstone National Park.
